Our mission
The mission of Val Voices, a Croatian vocal ensemble based in the San Francisco Bay Area, is to provide rewarding musical and educational experiences for members and audiences.
We perform music from the various regions of Croatia, originating in ancient through modern times and including newly composed works. Our singers come from diverse backgrounds and are dedicated to offering the highest level of amateur performance at affordable prices.
What we offer
Val Voices gives singers and audience members the opportunity to experience the Croatian language and Croatia’s beloved singing tradition.
Members explore, incorporate, and share the stories behind the songs, the musical scales used, and the many regional and island dialects that supply the lyrics.
Fun! We meld our voices, laugh at our mistakes, encourage each other, and gather the courage to perform. We are a vibrant vocal community.
Our history
Val Voices was formed in 2026 as a cultural program of the Croatian Cultural Center of San Francisco, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Val Voices is open to everyone. Members do not need to be trained singers, speak Croatian, or be of Croatian heritage. The ensemble was preceded by the Dalmacijo Singers, who delighted audiences with Croatian songs in the pre-pandemic years.
After a lengthy post-pandemic search, we were lucky to find Astrid Kuljanic, a native of Croatia whose training, talent, enthusiasm, and humor make her the perfect fit to reinstate a Croatian ensemble in the Bay Area.
Our first season began in April 2026 with a quartet. After only ten rehearsals, the quartet performed nine songs from Međimurje, Slavonija, Dubrovnik, Istria, Trogir, Dalmatia, Brač and Split, Korčula, and Zagreb. Members honed their Croatian pronunciation, soaked in the beauty and fun of the music, and learned about the different regions of Croatia.
